Welcome from the Executive Dean

Welcome to the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences incorporating the School of Indigenous Australian Studies. Featuring a blend of traditional and contemporary disciplines, the Faculty is the largest and most diverse at James Cook University. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses to approximately 4000 students at campuses in Townsville, Cairns and Mackay.
JCU’s commitment to research excellence is reflected in the reputation of researchers in the Faculty. Prominent areas of research include gender and IT issues in education, maritime archaeology, human perception, foster care, youth issues, and Australian and Indigenous Australian studies.
This strong research focus provides a stimulating atmosphere for students and encourages the development of research and critical thinking skills, essential in any career. The enthusiasm generated by researchers also creates a great teaching and learning environment enjoyed by both staff and students.
While many programs offered by the Faculty seek to engage students with issues relevant to life in tropical northern Australia and the Asia Pacific region, significant consideration is also given to important social, cultural and political issues in a wider global context. Graduates are prepared to pursue careers throughout the world and many do.
The career options available to the faculty’s graduates are as diverse as the graduates themselves. Our emphasis is on providing graduates with the generic skills that allow them to follow any, and as many, career paths as they choose.
