Interests

Peter Horton has a range of research interests focusing on the socio-cultural analysis of historical and contemporary dimensions of sport, physical education and health. Historical, sociological and cultural studies of Rugby union football in Australia and in the Asia Pacific region are significant features of his published work. Dr Horton is currently undertaking a major research project focusing upon Rugby and Pacific Islanders. This study will analyze their engagement in the game in Australia, in the Islands and globally. Dr Horton has been actively involved in Olympic Studies and the Olympic Movement, his 2008 publication looking at Sino-Australian diplomatic relations leading to the Beijing Olympics demonstrates the embrace of sport as a vehicle of international diplomacy, culture and economics. He is actively involved in the consideration of gender issues and challenge in sport and physical education, girls in elite sport, the declining levels of physical activity and sporting involvement, obesity and the associated educational and curricular issues.

Dr Horton is a member of the International Editorial Board of the International Journal of the History of Sport, a life member of the Australian Society for Sports History, a member of the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation and, not surprisingly, a sports tragic.
