Interests

Teacher education, both pre-service and in-service, problem-based learning.

Gail Mackay team teaches the undergraduate subject Managing Teaching and Learning on the Townsville campus with Angela Hill. She also teaches the subject to students in the Remote Area Teacher Education Program.

Prior to taking up a part time lecturing position at James Cook University in 2000, she had an extensive career within Education Queensland. Highlights of her career include:

  • Leadership at both the school and State level in a wide range of initiatives including the introduction of criteria based assessment (ROSBA) and the development of the Centre for Leadership Excellence;
  • Principalship of a new high school and one of the oldest in the State. Both schools were recognised for innovative programs and practices;
  • Executive Director of Northern Region involving the leadership and management of 100 schools and over 2000 staff;
  • District Director of the Townsville-Burdekin District with an intense relationship with 42 schools and direct impact on both principal and teacher practice.

She was one of the first women appointed to the position of Principal and the first woman appointed as Executive Director of a Region.

Her work in the area of social justice was recognised with the awarding of the Public Service Medal in the mid year honours list of 1995. She was also recognised for her work in leadershio and management when she was made a Fellow of the Institute of Educational Administration.

In joining the staff of the School of Education she is able to pursue her interest in teacher education through both teaching and research.
