Getting Started

The rules concerning what subjects you must complete for your degree vary from one degree to another.  This handbook will act as a guide but the complete rules are to be found in the Student Handbook. The Handbook can be purchased from the JCU Bookshop or accessed on the web at: http://www.jcu.edu.au/courses/handbooks.

SUBJECT CODES

All JCU subject codes consist of 6 characters.  Here is an example – Communication (CU) subjects at level 1, Anthropology (AN) at level 2 and English (EL) at level 3.

MODES OF DELIVERY

There are four modes of delivery available at JCU: Internal, Block, Limited and External. The mode of delivery indicates the way that the subject is being taught.  It should be noted that many subjects will also be taught wholly or partly by video conference.

I

Internal

Subjects offered via internal mode require regular attendance at classes over most weeks of a study period and are usually held on campus.  Internal mode subjects offered during Study Period 1 (Semester 1) or Study Period 2 (Semester 2) are of 13 weeks duration

B

Block

Less than 6 weeks duration intensive study either on-campus or off-campus (some maybe held over several weekends, others for perhaps a week and others on a sequence of night time sessions held over several weeks.

L

Limited

Subjects offered via limited attendance mode are offered via flexible delivery and require some on-campus attendance for classes.  Flexible delivery may incorporate the delivery of teaching material wholly or in part via the Internet, print material or CD Rom. Some practicum subjects are also designated as limited attendance subjects.

X

External

Subjects offered via external mode are offered via flexible delivery and require no on-campus attendance for classes.  Flexible delivery may incorporate the delivery of teaching material wholly or in part via the Internet, print material or CD Rom.

Some subjects have lectures that are delivered in part or whole by Video Conference.  If the subject is offered internally (I) there will usually be a local tutor provided.  In some subjects lectures may be provided alternately from both campuses.  Please check with the lecturer concerned if you require more details.  Most subjects use a web-based learning support called Learn JCU.  All subjects listed in this booklet are offered by internal mode unless otherwise stated.   You can access a complete list of subjects called the Master Schedule of subjects in the student handbook at http://www.jcu.edu.au/courses/handbooks.
